Happy Birthday Casey
Casey turned 8 years old last week.
His celebration included a party on the Saturday before his birthday. For the third year in a row, we held the "Birthday Olympics." Aside from having to make the medals (extra-large, zinc-coated washers spray painted gold, silver, bronze, etc., then strung on fancy ribbons), the only preparations neccessary were to make a birthday cake
and a Mount Olympus of ice cream. (That's a plastic figurine of Zeus on top of "Mount Olympus.")
Party guests (five 7- & 8-year-old boys) were assigned hero names from Greek mythology. Casey gave himself the only Greek god name (Zeus). Britt was Dionysus; I was Athene.
It was a cold, windy March day, but we couldn't hold the olympics indoors, so we went to the playground as scheduled. First competion was an obstacle course.
After the obstacle course, we headed up to the soccer field for the other competitions: javelin throw (also known as the broomstick throw), limbo, a 1/4 mile foot race, and finally a kids versus grown ups soccer match.
Here comes Achilles up the hill.
We always end the birthday olympics with a kids versus grown ups soccer game, so that every party guest gets at least one gold medal. In years past, the grown ups have had to "fix" the soccer match to ensure the kids' victory. But I'm sorry to say that this year the grown ups were fairly beaten by the 2nd and 3rd graders.
After 90 minutes of running around in the cold, everyone was ready to return home for cake, ice cream, and present-opening.
That night Casey spent the night at the home of his friend-from-across-the-street.
On his actual birthday, Casey opened presents before he even got out of bed.
So he started his day by getting a pair of coveted Red Sox tickets!
Beau was a bit jealous of Casey's windfall (But as it turns out, Beau got a pair of tickets, too -- for the game the night after Casey is going.)
After school, he got even more presents! And that night, he won first place in the Wolf division of the cub scout pack's Pinewood Derby.
I think it was a pretty good birthday.
