Karate Chop

On Wednesday, with one swift side kick, Beau broke this board in two with his foot.

Hockey Season Opener

Hockey season began in August when practice resumed. Beau's team played their first league game last Sunday at the very respectable hour of 8:30 am. And the game was at our home rink, so it was not too much trouble (ie no one had to get up before first light).

This photo is a bit blurry, but here is Beau after the game -- all red in the face. His team lost, but they played a decent game.

Here is Casey at the rink, re-enacting the snit he was in earlier when we insisted that we were ALL going to Beau's game.

It was a beautiful fall day in New England -- kind of a shame to be inside at the rink.

In Casey's book, there is no injustice so great that it cannot be overcome with a trip to (Dante, join with me now...): Dunkin Donuts!

Apple-Picking Excursion

It's that time of year again: time to head out to the Massachusett's countryside and pick some apples. Apples are just now ripening, and we haven't been to the orchards this early in the season for six years, so there were plenty of apples, and we'll have to go again in a couple of weeks to pick the varieties that aren't yet ripe.

As with many of our outings, yesterday's trip to the orchard began with a stop at the ice cream stand. Usually, this place is closed for the season when we drive by it, but, like I said, we made the trip earlier than usual this year.

The trees were loaded with apples.

But, of course, some of the best looking apples were way up high.

It didn't take long to fill up our half-bushel bag.

Back at home, Britt and Beau made an apple pie.

It looked good,

and tasted great.

Camping in New Hampshire

Traditionally, we go camping the weekend after Labor Day. Last weekend, we headed to Pillsbury State Park in New Hampshire.

This is the view from our campsite.

After putting up the tent,

we went canoeing on May Pond.

We saw two loons.

Casey caught a guppy-sized bass.

Then he caught a sun fish.

Then he caught a much larger bass, but it spit the hook just as we got it to the canoe.

That night, the campsite was rife with bull frogs.

It poured rain all night. In the morning Britt cooked oatmeal in a drizzle.

Despite the drizzle, the mist, and the boys' protests, we took a hike. We didn't see any moose, but we saw some moose poop.

We saw many orb spider webs,

some enormous fungus,

and quite a few bright orange-red salamanders.

At trailsend, the kids climbed "Balance Rock."

So did Britt.

Before leaving, Britt and Casey skipped stones in Mill Pond.

Down the road from Pillsbury State Park, is the town of Washington.

It's the first town incorporated under the name of George Washington.

We ate lunch at the Washington General Store.

Last stop of the day was the birthplace and homestead of Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the United States.

We had a nice tour of the house and learned about the family, then we headed back home where we had much-needed showers, dried out our sopping wet tent, and generally got back to our domesticated life.

First Day of School

The kids went back to school on Tuesday, September 4.

Look at those spanking white shoes!

Beau and Mathias's Dinner Party

When the kids' friends Lael and Mathias (and their friend Tyler) were in town for a week in August, Beau and Mathias hatched a plan to cook a dinner party all on their own.

They planned the menu then did some of the shopping and all of the cooking. Here you see Mathias zesting limes for the salsa.

Beau made meatballs

and chocolate chip snickerdoodles.

The first course was a tropical smoothy in a colored-sugar rimmed glass.

The appetizer was chips with Mathias's specially doctored salsa.

Next was soup and salad. Beau and Mathias thought that since they were the kitchen staff, they should eat in the kitchen.

The entree was spaghetti and meatballs.

We persuaded the cooks to join us at the table.

Lastly, the piece de resistance: chocolate chip snickerdoodle ice cream sandwiches with chocolate sauce.

It was yummy, and we all had plenty to eat that night.
