In hockey, Casey usually plays defense. He figured out early in the year (September) that defensive players get more ice time, since his coach usually set up three lines of offense but only two lines of defense for the games. Thus, defensive players are off the ice for one shift, whereas, offensive players sit through two shifts before getting back on the ice. Casey very quickly pegged himself as a defensive player and has become quite good. He's aggressive, focused, and smart. He's even scored a few goals as a defensive player.
Also early on, when the coach was rotating through players to find a suitable goalie, Casey played one stint as goalie. but with only one practice as goalie beforehand, he was not really prepared, and the team lost that game.
Ever since then, however, whenever the neighborhood kids play street hockey, Casey plays goalie, improvising goalie equipment with one regular ice hockey glove and his catcher's mitt from baseball. (Ice hockey goalies wear very padded gloves, and the glove of the hand not holding the stick is somewhat mitt-like for catching flying pucks.)
Lately, he's been asking his coach if he can play goalie in practice again. Finally, at last night's practice, Coach Eddie let Casey have a turn as goalie. Here you see Casey outfitted in full goalie gear (except for his helmet). It's so much padding that it makes a player waddle. Kinda like a bear.
Casey had a good time, and his "team" won the 3-on-3 half-ice scrimmage.

The Last Days of Beau's Snow Fort
Tempuratures hit the 50s today, and the snow is melting fast. Most of the snow if gone from the playing fields (which is good because Casey's Birthday Olympics party is on Saturday). Where the snow is piled up, it melts more slowly, but even so, Beau's snow fort will soon be only a memory. He tells me that the name of the fort is Helm's Deep (apparently this is something from Lord of the Rings). The fort has been a neighborhood project, keeping the neighbor kids busy for a week of the pre-dinner hours -- they alternately worked at building up the fort and using it for snowball fights.
Here is Beau lurking in his fort.

Evactuation Day 2007
The kids were off from school today for Evacuation Day -- that's the day the Patriots ran the British out of town back in 1776.
Really, it's an excuse to have a holiday on St. Patrick's Day.
The kids and I made homemade pretzels. Then we drove through the snowstorm to get to a hockey tournament because the tournament organizers did not have the good manners to cancel the games. It took us nearly two hours to make a trip that usually takes 25 minutes. At least Casey's team won.

Missing Post
Here there should be an entry about our weekend at the Cape for Beau's hockey tournament, but I've hit the wall on hockey.

Cowboy Casey
Today, the kids' school is celebrating "Read Across America." All total, the students read more than 2007 books, and this year the celebration was a Western theme, culminating with the school principal riding down the street on a horse. In the classes, the kids made hats or vests to wear as part of the celebration, but Casey went all out in getting dressed this morning.

Built Like Kenmore?
Not that I was ever "hip" even when I was younger, but... the only store in the whole mall where I found jeans to fit my body and my style was a Sears.

Snow Wars
10 minutes to make snowballs,
“FIRE!” Out goes the call.
Snowballs whizzing and blurring
Four kids hurrying, hurrying.
Hot chocolate was heated,
Now, the matrix is needed.
Slowing down, time-out called.
Snowballs created, extra walls
Time-in! It’s time to re-begin!
Find shelter behind a tree or bin.
Snowballs fast, this means war.
“More snowballs! MORE! MORE!”
Time goes by, way too fast.
Just five minutes for this to last.
Reserve snowballs go by flying.
The sunlight is slowly dying.
Snowballs hitting, I’m not caring.
Wondering how our team is faring
Last seconds go by way too fast.
The war is over, finally, at last.
